The FIMFA Lx10 exhibits the premiere of “The Last Caravan” in Portugal, a singular documentary film that presents the lives and life-style of the last authentic comedians - puppeteers in the Central European region (Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic and Germany) in various cultural and social contexts. They are literally the last strolling comedians; some of them still play and live in their caravans and maintain their lifestyle as wandering entertainers. Besides the lives of the individual people, the film focuses on the common roots of this kind of European culture. We can see on the screen four nomad family portraits - The Dubsky and Anderle Family from Slovakia, The Kopecky and Novak Family from Czech Republic, The Kemeny Family from Hungary and The Dombrowski Family from Germany. Four stories of free-spirited people who gave up the comfort and warmth of their stable home out of love for the art of comedy and also because of a strong bond to family traditions. This is a film about emotions, love, and true values…

We would like to make a special mention about the participation of Anton Anderle, one of the famous puppeteers presented in the film, unfortunately this was his last role, he died shortly after the filming. This also a tribute to him. The Slovakian company Tradicné Bábkové Divadlo Anton Anderle has a special place in our hearts. Anton Anderle was a true friend and participated in the festival in 2003. He also presented a small exhibition at Teatro Taborda and in this 2010 edition, it would be obvious to us that he would be here. He was magical, with a wisdom and unique energy, a skillful manipulator and a great talker…

“The Last Caravan” has been presented in many film and puppetry festivals. In 2008 the film was awarded by Prize of Martin Slivka at international festival ETNOFILM in Čadca, Slovakia.

A devastating reconstruction of the attack on the Twin Towers. With the help of juice cartons, clay dolls and cardboard furniture, the viewer sees through the eyes of the hijackers, the aeroplane passengers and the people in the towers.
“Destruction triumphs here. One does not know whether to cry at so many wasted lives or rejoice at the abundance of theatrical imagination on display”. - Marijn van der Jagt , Vrij Nederland

Snailtrails Slakkesporen

The film of Snailtrails.
Snailtrails is a surreal portrait of a day and night from the life of an elderly somewhat confused lady. In her perception Time and Space are elastic. She undertakes an odyssey across the city, an amalgamate of Rotterdam, Berlin and Tokio. Through her confused eyes we see this metropolis: cars are flat-irons, pedestrians are shrimps and the bumper cars at the fair take the form of children's shoes. The chaos of the city, its bustling alleys, parks and shopping malls, appears to correlate to the chaos in her head.

PLUG
CAMa – CENTRO DE ARTES DA MARIONETA
10 to 14 May

Concept: Paulo Duarte Artistic collaboration: Renaud Herbin and Julika Mayer Sound and interfaces: Morgan Daguenet Lighting design: Fabien Bossard

A residence of artistic creation from Paulo, "PLUG", will take place during FIMFA.

"PLUG" is in its initial phase of creation, it intends to challenge the wandering of the virtual point of view, putting this notion in challenge, under the gaze of new communication technologies. The new uses of the internet reclassify the notion of wandering and are open to new perceptions of space/time and subjectivity. How are we going to wander in the network itself? The virtual wandering passes through multiplier effects of space, time and identities. In a heteronymous game, in which “I can” travel, communicate, share, transform myself. Each one chooses their image, their identity, between the false and real. The manipulation, spontaneity and its application in the network, causing problems between what is intimate and what is public.

"PLUG" intends to create on stage a virtual situation, a situation in loco. How to produce a space-time and a presence state multiplied?

Paulo Duarte has graduated in Painting from Faculdade de Belas-Artes at Oporto University and in Puppet Theatre by ESNAM - École Nationale Superieure des Arts de la Marionnette de Charleville-Mezieres. His Scenography and Visual Theatre stage was directed by Josef Svoboda and Leszek Madzik. After the ESNAM he extended his experiences in several areas: set design, acting, direction, design and puppets construction and scenic objects, object theatre. He worked with Roman Paska, Joan Baixas, Fanfare Mineable, CREA - Théâtre de Tournai, Zaven Paré, Allen Weiis, among others. He has directed several training workshops at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona and in AMK (Turku, Finland). He was a member of Cie Pseudonymo and has participated as an actor-manipulator and puppet builder in various artistic projects for other companies, in addition to the development of personal projects.
